Wonderware Historian

Wonderware Historian is a high-performance process historian, capable of storing huge volumes of data generated from today's industrial facilities. Historian easily retrieves and securely delivers information to desktop or mobile devices, enabling organizations to analyze processes anywhere at any time.

Historian is the perfect complement to Wonderware InTouch HMI allowing critical process data to be captured and available for troubleshooting and process analysis as the need arises. The new managed historian solution from Wonderware, Historian Online Edition, helps minimize capital and IT costs with its SaaS (software as a service) offering.

Myths about Historian

Wonderware Historian is a high performance process historian capable of storing the tremendous flows of data coming from today’s automated industrial facilities. One of the world’s most popular historians, Wonderware Historian is used in over 25,000 industrial sites every day. Historian was the first major historian to combine a proprietary high speed data acquisition and storage system with a Microsoft SQL Server back end for enhanced data retrieval capabilities.

Highly scalable and flexible, Wonderware Historian can be applied to a single process or grown, over time, to a large multi-tiered information management solution serving dozens of sites and hundreds of users worldwide. Its multi-tiered architecture allows cost-effective isolation of the control and business networks and broader, safer data access by more users and thereby increasing the system’s Return On Investment (ROI).

As a core component of the Wonderware System Platform, Historian has connectivity to the widest range of data sources and systems in the Industry. Its advanced data retrieval modes means companies won’t need a full time IT person to generate reports for the team. Historian also integrates to a complete line of desktop, web and mobile data analysis and reporting clients, enabling visualization and analysis of processes from any location.

Wonderware Historian is ideal for:

  • Historian applications of up to 2,000,000 data tags
  • Single and multi-tier applications (local historian instances replicating data or sending summary data to higher-tier corporate historian instance)
  • Upstream Oil and Gas, Water and Wastewater or geographically-dispersed facilities that operate with low bandwidth data networks and experience intermittent, late or data bursts
  • High availability or disaster recovery requirements
  • Applications that generate analog, discrete and string data, as well as alarms and events
  • Applications that require mobile data access
  • Applications with severe Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) or Information Technology (IT) constraints

Introduced in 1996, the Wonderware Historian has enjoyed continual improvement to better meet the needs of our users. Today, the Wonderware Historian is capable of storing data from 2 million tags at millisecond resolution. It can be configured to suit the particular requirements of industries such as Oil and Gas, Power, Mining, Metals, Food and Beverage, Water and Wastewater, Pulp and Paper, Pharmaceuticals and many more. Configuration is one-click simple when used with System Platform and the value of InTouch HMI is greatly extended through capturing real-time data for later troubleshooting or process optimization. Data from the Historian will become essential to an organization's Operations and Maintenance teams as it illuminates process and equipment issues so cost-effective actions can be formulated in the least possible time. Today’s industrial workers need information to perform at their best and Wonderware Historian delivers.

Historian Online Edition

Wonderware Historian is now offered as a cloud hosted solution for companies who wish to reduce their capital expenses and Information Technology (IT) burden. Invensys has partnered with Microsoft to offer this innovative new Software as a Service (SaaS) using Microsoft’s Windows Azure Cloud environment to ensure data security and high availability for critical process data. Wonderware Historian Online Edition collects and aggregates data from other Wonderware Historians and includes data reporting and analysis clients to provide a complete operations information management solution.

Historian 2014:

Scalability has been significantly increased in the latest release, Historian 2014, up to a maximum of 2 million tags. This 400% improvement in tag limits mean that Historian is capable of handling the largest industrial sites or summarizing data from dozens of local sites.  Also new in 2014 is the consolidation of alarm and event history with process history in System Platform applications. This consolidation makes it easier than ever to develop reports containing all three types of data.
